Welcome to the NTU Wikimap Project
The NTU Wikimap project aims to provide an online support tool for students whose course of study involves an external placement. By combining global placement information on a single map, a resource is being developed across disciplines that gives students access to an increasingly broad and in-depth view of what it is like to live and study at destinations all over the world.
All the information provided is authored by past or existing students who have been to these destinations themselves, giving a unique, invaluable and up to date "students' eye" view of what it is like to live, study or work at a particular destination. This provides the level of detail and perspective that tutors are rarely able to give, but instead enables previous cohorts of students to pass-on their own experiences to future cohorts.
The project benefits students in at least three ways:
- To inform the decision making process with the aim of improving students' ability to find a "best fit" placement destination as part of their programme of study.
- To aid orientation when starting a placement - for example, by providing advice about preparation before departure, and helping students to find their way around and settle upon arrival.
- Pedagogical tie-in - once on placement, students are required to contribute to the wiki page for their placement destination. This provides opportunities to embed IT and writing skills as part of the placement assessment.
